Soldatova The article is devoted to the history of origin and development of the idea of construction of the railway across Siberia from Taishet to the north of Lake Baikal to the Far East – the future of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. The article deals with the fi rst exploration work on the design of the road and discussion questions on the choice of the direction of the track. The reasons and factors that infl uence the decision. The fi rst proposals and projects of development of the transport Trans-Baikal and the Amur region refer to the last quarter of XIX century. Selecting the route for the Trans supervised the Russian Geographical Society. Thoroughly study the issue and conduct research works by famous railway engineer O.P. Vyazemsky, G.V. Adrian, N.P. Mezheninov and others. A detailed study of the natural and geographical conditions of the area building, its population, the available means of communication, trade, agriculture and animal husbandry, forestry and fi sheries population, industry, the turnover of goods and passenger traffi c held A.E. Bogdanovsky. Of great interest to the construction of the road showed the governor of Irkutsk L.M. Knyazev, P.K. Gran and others. The project is supported by the All-Russian Emperor Alexander III and Nicholas II. The fi nal decision on the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline has already been taken during the Soviet era, when the April 13, 1932 SNK has signed a decree «On the construction of the Baikal-Amur railroad.» Keywords: ASB, research and designing of railways, natural and geographical conditions, the direction of the route, Siberia and the Far East.
