Universal History Annotation << Back CULTURAL AND ENLIGHTENING ACTIVITY OF PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES AT THE BEGNNING OF THE XX CENTURE R.A. Fando The article considers the activity of the Moscow Society of Public Universities, created in 1906, whose main task was to increase the cultural and intellectual level of the ordinary people. After the establishment of the Society, similar organizations soon appeared in various cities of Russia and began to act as a link between the intelligentsia and the people. Leading professors were involved in lecturing, who in addition to pedagogical work were engaged in scientific research in various fields of knowledge. Moscow Society of Public Universities has opened 6 departments: legal, literary, natural science, medical, economic, art. One of the directions of the Company's work was to attract representatives of working professions to participate in the work of various creative groups: folk theaters, art workshops, ensembles, literary studios.
