Muradov In the article the author tried to summarize the literature, sources, and history of studying the historical geography of the Dzharo-Belokan free societies. Problems of historical geography during the Soviet period of the history were not practically studied due to the fact that such interests were not approved by the offi cial ideology. This was done as if out of good intentions, so as not to accidentally hurt the national feelings of a particular people, to preserve interethnic peace and harmony. As a result, problems accumulated, which manifested themselves with all their force after the collapse of the USSR. The confl icts in the Caucasus are a manifestation of the short-sighted policy in the sphere of interethnic relations, especially in the national-territorial division and the establishment of borders.
