RUSSIAN-OTTOMAN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS DURING THE PERIOD OF CONCLUSION OF THE PETERSBURG AND CONSTANTINOPOL AGREEMENTS (1723–1724) |
D.S. Kidirniyazov, M.-P.B. Abdusalamov
Based on archival materials and special historical literature, the article discusses Russian-Ottoman diplomatic relations at the time of the signing of the Petersburg (1723) and Constantinople (1724) treaties. The purpose of this study is to study and analyze new archival materials on Russian-Ottoman relations in the first quarter of the 18th century. The authors focus on the diplomatic duel of the St. Petersburg and Istanbul courts, which began after the Persian campaign of Peter I regarding the delimitation of spheres of influence in the Caucasus. It was found that the peoples of the Caucasus during the Russian-Ottoman confrontation were oriented towards Russia, seeing in it a defender from the predatory aspirations of neighboring states. It is concluded that the St. Petersburg and Constantinople treaties were important for the historical fate of local peoples, and contributed to the expansion of Russian infl uence in the region.
Keywords: Caucasus, Russia, Ottoman Empire, Safavid Iran, diplomacy, ambassador, treaties.
