THE NORTH CAUCASUS IN RUSSIAN-OTTOMAN RELATIONS IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF THE XVIII CENTURY (ON THE 300th ANNIVERSARY OF PETER THE GREAT’S CASPIAN CAMPAIGN) |
E.G. Dzhakhieva
Based on the analysis of documents and special scientific literature, the article examines the North Caucasus in the politics of the Ottoman Empire and the Russian state in the first quarter of the XVIII century. The analysis of the political situation formed in the region during the Russian-Ottoman struggle is carried out. It is stated that the aggressive aspirations of the Porte were fueled by the efforts of Western European powers pursuing anti-Russian goals in international relations. It is emphasized that during the Russian-Ottoman rivalry in the region Kabarda occupied an important place. It is concluded that the failure of the policy of the Russian government to secure Kabarda was one of the main reasons for Peter I’s shift of attention to the western coast of the Caspian Sea.
