Universal History Annotation << Back TO THE 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD: HISTORIOGRAPHIC APPROACHES IN ASSESSING THE GEOPOLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BATTLE AS A RADICAL TURNING POINT IN WORLD WAR II N.V. Shabelnik On the eightieth anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad, the article discusses the main points of view in the historical literature on assessing the impact of the battle on the course of the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War as a whole. Historical revisionism, caused by changes in the geopolitical situation, has given rise to many scientifi c views, opinions, as well as discussions and polemics on various historical topics and events, including the Battle of Stalingrad. In Russian historiography, since the end of the 20th century, there has been a discussion about the geopolitical signifi cance of the results of the Battle of Stalingrad as a turning point in the war. Western historians give conflicting assessments of the militarypolitical and historical significance of the outcome of the battle. In the article, the author makes an overview of the main opinions in the historical literature on the assessment of the results and significance of the Battle of Stalingrad in the war. The author analyzes the key factors confirming the transition of the strategic initiative in the course of hostilities from the Wehrmacht to the Soviet army near Stalingrad.
