Universal History Annotation << Back THE BATTLE OF KARAMAN IN 1605: A LOOK THROUGH THE PRISM OF TIME (TO THE QUESTION OF THE CAMPAIGN OF THE COMMANDER I.M. BUTURLIN IN DAGESTAN) A.N. Alilov, M.-P.B. Abdusalamov Based on archival documents and special historical literature, the article examines one of the most signifi cant battles of the Late Middle Ages – the Battle of Karaman in 1605. It is emphasized that this battle was the logical outcome of all the previous campaigns of the tsarist troops in Dagestan at the turn of the XVI–XVII centuries. The authors, taking into account the achievements in the national Caucasian studies, note the foreign policy prerequisites of the military campaign of the commander I.M. Buturlin in shamkhalstvo, analyze the causes of the defeat of the tsarist troops and the consequences for the Moscow state. Noting the important historical significance of the Battle of Karaman in 1605, the authors state that the success of the Shamkhal coalition in the confrontation with the troops of I.M. Buturlin was primarily due to the consolidation of their forces in the face of external danger. It is concluded that, despite some excesses of Caucasian politics, the activity of the Russian state in Dagestan was not just a series of achievements and mistakes, but a historically progressive process that gave a subsequent impetus to the development of Russian-Caucasian relations in a progressive manner.
