Universal History Annotation << Back NATIONAL INTERESTS OF RUSSIA IN THE FAR EAST IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GEOPOLITICAL CONCEPT OF RUSSIAN CONSERVATIVES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20th CENTURY V.Yu. Belyankina The article analyzes the views of representatives of the Russian conservative public at the beginning of the 20th century on the problem of Russia’s national interests in the Far East, economic and political infl uence in Mongolia and Manchuria. The attitude of social and political circles to the threat of the emergence of a new center of power in world politics, the role of Russia in the Far East, is considered. The author describes the problem of Russian-Japanese rivalry in the Far East region at the beginning of the 20th century. Attention is paid to the assessment among Russian conservatives of the Russian-Japanese convention of 1907 on the delimitation of spheres of influence in Mongolia and Manchuria, the Russian-Japanese convention of 1910 on Manchuria. Based on archival materials and periodicals, the author reveals the attitude of right-wing parties and their supporters to the importance of the Far Eastern border territories for Russian economic and military-political interests, the issue of Japanese advancement in the region, the political coup in Mongolia in 1911 and the events of the Xinhai Revolution in China, the transformation Manchuria as a springboard for an attack on Russia. The article touches upon the topic of international relations and foreign policy of Russia at the beginning of the 20th century.
