The article, based on archival materials and special historical literature, examines the history of monetary circulation in
Kumykia in the XVII – early XIX centuries. The sources give an idea of the monetary units that were in circulation in the Kumyk
lands. It is stated that Savdagars-merchants actively used monetary units of various origins, while perfectly knowing their real
price. The authors note that in the Kumyk possessions, up to the second half of the XIX century, various monetary units were in
circulation, including Persian tumans, abbasi of Shirvan, Cuban, Baku coinage, Dutch chervonets, Russian silver rubles, etc.
It is emphasized that due to the growth of trade relations between the Kumyk state entities and the Russian Empire, there is a
gradual transition to unifi cation in the monetary system, in which the Persian fog rate fell and, on the contrary, the Russian ruble
exchange rate strengthened.
The authors conclude that the salary payments made by the Russian government to the Kumyk rulers in rubles objectively
strengthened its role in the economic life of the Kumyk lands and contributed, ultimately, to their economic and political
integration into the Russian Empire.
