Universal History Annotation << Back Research of Roerichs’ in the Western Himalayas Shatko V.G., Potapova S.A. It is reported about the botanical research of the Roerichs in the Western Himalayas in the 30-40s of the XX century. For a comprehensive study of the nature, history, culture of the Himalayas, N.K. Roerich founded the Urusvati Institute of Himalayan Scientifi c Research, in which many famous scientists from Western Europe, America and Asia were involved. Expeditions were organized and conducted to different regions of the studied regions to collect material (herbarium, seeds, stuffed animals and birds, old manuscripts, minerals and rocks, historical artifacts, cultural and art objects), which were studied at the institute. Based on the results of the study, the institute published Proceedings, as well as monographs. On the territory of "Urusvati" a nursery of medicinal plants was founded, which served as material for study in the biochemical laboratory of the institute. According to old Tibetan recipes, medicines were restored in Urusvati. Rich scientifi c collections collected during the expeditions are now kept at the Urusvati Institute”.
