Universal History Annotation << Back Valeria Golubtsova, the Most Brilliant Rector in the History of Moscow Power Engineering Institute V.V. Kuznetsova The essay is mainly devoted to the Director (rector) of the Moscow Power Institute (MPI) Valeria A.Golubtsova. She was the wife of Georgiy Malenkov, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of VKP(b)-CPSU who occupied the second place in the party hierarchy in the last years of life of Stalin. Although both spouses belonged to the gentry, they were fighting, in Civil war, in Turkestan, on the side of Red Army. There they met and married. All their family life was characterized by high cultural level their three children: Volia (b. 1924), Andrew (b. 1937) and George (b. 1938) became professors, respectively, in architecture, biophysics and geochemistry. The house has a library of about 10 thousand volumes. Having been graduated, in 1934, from MPE, V. A. worked, until 1938, in its department of cable equipment. The most heroic period in the life of V.A. Golubtsova came during the war. Evacuated to Kuibyshev she was nominated the instructor of the regional party Committee on aviation and electrical industry. This meant round the clock labour to take from the East trains with equipment and personnel, placing them often in the open field under shed and almost immediate start to produce munitions for the front. After the re-evacuation to Moscow V.A. Golubtsova became the Director of the MPI, she headed raising new buildings, workshops, absorbing the latest German trophey equipment. When she was asked whether she used for help her powerful husband, she replied: «No. But, of course, people know who he is. They often willingly help me. Why should I deny that which is beneficial to the Institute?» In 1957, after the defeat of «anti-party group» of Molotov, Malenkov and Kaganovich, which started its fight against N.S. Khrushchev, G.M. Malenkov with his wife were exiled in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan) where he was appointed Director of the hydroelectric power station (HPS). Over the year, the HPS ranked first among the hydro and thermal power stations in Kazakhstan. Then Khrushchev ordered to transfer Malenkov in Ekibastuz as Director of the local thermal power station (TPS) which was working extremely uneffectively. For a couple of years Malenkov and Golubtsova made a little dirty coal village fconstantlly failing plan assignments in a cosy green town with household farms. They introduced a new technology of coal combustion, which allowed to refuse oil combustion, and TPS became profitable. Then Malenkov was expelled from the party for alleged loss of Party-membership card. In Ekibastuz, Golubtsova and Malenkov worked for about 10 years. After Khrushchev’s removal they moved in a little suburban town Udelnaya situated near Moscow, where since 1930-s was working Malenkov’s mother as the Director of the sanatorium. Several years later, the Malenkovs built a small cooperative apartment in Moscow. Only in 1980, by the order of the Yu.V. Andropov ordered to grant to Malenkovs a large apartment with two bedrooms on Frunzenskaya embankment. In 1975, when MPI celebrated its 70th anniversary all the people gave a standing ovation in honor of V.A. Golubtsova, forcing the top brass move over and give her a place in the first row in the Presidium of the meeting.
