Herzfeld Sergey Herzfeld passed almost all the Great Patriotic war in Army in the Field, to begin with the fi rst days of the war up to the day in March, 1944, when he was badly wounded. His army ways were long and diverse, passed via more than 50 big and little towns. In 1940-1941, he mastered profession of pilot of light planes and paratrooper. But then there were not planes enough in our airforces. He became mortar man, mastered multi-rail rocket launcher «Katiusha». Then suddenly he was directed as telephone and wireless operator in infantry. He dragged superheavy boxes and a bit lighter bobbins along front line. He was at war on Voronezh front and on 2nd Baltic front. On March, the 1st, he stayed on the station Pustoshka (main line Velikie Luki – Moskow – Riga). Suddenly intercommunication ceased. Sergey came out to look for a breach in deep snow cover. A mine exploded and he was heavily wounded: contusion, burns and a leg injured so seriously that, at first, surgeons planned to amputate it. The most respected soldier war medal «For courage» will remind of this event. He was evacuated to a hospital in Vysniy Volochiok, then in Kazan. Surgeons saved his leg, but considered him to be unserviceable. S. Herzfeld became a military engineer. After the war, he built the port in Sochi, again at the call of the young professionals who had returned to the army, building military airfi elds in Nikolaev and. October (Crimea), worked on the construction of underground in Sevastopolvoenmorstroe (unique built docks for the submarine base in Balaklava) in Dalvoenmorstroe, chief engineer of large construction management at the Moscow Air Defense District, Orgstroe Glavvoenstroya. During his military service with the post-war years he lived, worked, built in more than 100 cities and towns of the country. The Notes are plentiful of illustrations with prewar and war-time views of the places where S. Herzfeld lived, fought, and underwent a cure. It happened that casually the same places, such as they are nowadays, were found in Internet and are given besides the analogues old photos (the new ones differ being color).
