Universal History Annotation << Back BIOGRAPHY RECONSTRUCTION OF P.A. BAKHMATOV. PERIOD OF 1932–1934 A.R. Narskiy The second in the series of the articles on the life of P.A. Bahmatov (1896 (1898?)–1964) covers the period of his activities from 1932 to 1934. In this period P.A. Bahmatov first headed the all-Union (now all-Russian) scientifi c research Institute of aviation materials (VIAM) being its fi rst director, then took the lead in Aviation supply Base in the system of people's Commissariat of heavy industry (NKTP) of the Soviet Union. In October of 1934 he was appointed as a chief of the plant laboratory of plant № 1 named after Aviakhim. The general organizing role of P.A. Bakhmatov in establishing VIAM was to develop the structure of the Institute, to select the personnel for its forming laboratories, to schedule the work, to enter into cooperation with the enterprises of aviation industry. In its fi rst year Institute of aviation materials not only continued successfully the research work begun at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TSAGI) but in tight timeline it launched new research in the fi eld of structural materials to meet the needs of experimental constructions.
