ACADEMICIAN L.D. LANDAU: COULD MEDICINE HAVE SAVED HIM NOWADAYS? |
B.S. Gorobets
Two moments related to the last years of life of the great Soviet physicist, academician Lev D. Landau ate discussed: (1) up to what level recovered his intellectual capabilities; (2) whether the medicine of today could have saved Landau’s life after his intestine had been operated, in the end of March, 1968. The first question was sometimes discussed in papers and books on the history of modern physics, and some controversial opinions were given on the theme. The second question was not put and discussed, as far as we know. Meanwhile, the progress in medicine in course of the last half a century allows to suppose that, in all probability, the Landau’s life could have been saved.
