Universal History Annotation << Back BIOGRAPHY RECONSTRUCTION OF P.A. BAKHMATOV. PERIOD OF 1934–1964 A.R. Narskiy The fi nal article from the series reconstructing the biography of P.A. Bakhmatov, the fi rst chief of the all-Union (now all-Russian) scientifi c research Institute of aviation materials (VIAM) covers the events of his life from 1934 to 1964. In the second half of the 1930s – early 1940s P.A. Bakhmatov held a number of important positions fi rst at plant № 1 Aviakhim, then at the all-Union Association «Technoexport» of People’s Commissariat of Foreign Trade of the USSR and People’s Commissariat of Electrotechnical Industry of the USSR. During the great Patriotic war he held the post of Commissar of training battalion at the naval aviation technical school named after V.M. Molotov, then Deputy battalion commander (up to the end of 1942); after that he was «called under control» of Military Council of the Amur’s Red Banner Military fl otilla. Р.A. Bakhmatov took part in the war against Japan as Head of Party school at the main base of the flotilla. He was present on the ships and in formations involved in the battles, took part in the operations to capture several settlements, carried out extensive propaganda and lectures. A signifi cant contribution of Peter Andreevich in the victory over the enemy was awarded with the order of «Red Star» and the medals of «For victory over Germany» and «For victory over Japan», as well as several other high awards. At the end of 1951 he was awarded with the rank of Colonel. From 1950 to 1956 Pеter Andreyevich worked in the political management of the Black Sea fleet.
