Abaeva This article is devoted to the issues of the history and culture of the balkarian ethnos, covered by an outstanding german scientist and climber of the second half of the XIX-th century Gottfried Merzbacher. To date, the work has not been translated into Russian and is not widely used by native caucasiologists because of the language barrier and the rarity of the publication. The purpose of this study is to introduce a new source in the scientifi c circulation of ethnography of the of the caucasian highlanders, as well as familiarize oneself with the materials contained in it.
