Universal History Annotation << Back GERMAN ORIENTALIST KARL FRIEDRICH NEUMANN – SISTEMATIZATOR OF SOURCE STUDY MATERIALS ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF THE CAUCASUS А.М. Abaeva The article discusses the approach of the German orientalist Karl Friedrich Neumann to the question of the origin, classification, and settlement of the peoples of the Caucasus. The scientific views of the traveler are set out in the historical and ethnographic work «Russia and the Circassians», which was published by the printing house of I.G. Cotta in 1840. So far, the study has not been translated into Russian, and therefore it is not very familiar to Russian Caucasian studies. The purpose of this study is to expand the source base of the history of the peoples of the Caucasus. It is concluded that Karl Neuman not only made an enormous contribution to Caucasian studies, but also had a significant influence on the formation of the concept of Caucasian ethnic groups in the european worldview of XIX-th century.
