Universal History Annotation << Back SOLAR ACTIVITY: MYTHS AND REALITIES (TO THE HISTORY OF IDEAS ABOUT THE PHENOMENON) S.V. Belov The history of the study of solar activity is considered. The phenomenon of negative correlation of sunspots with seismicity and volcanism of the Earth is explained. The cause of sunspots is discussed. It is assumed that the appearance of spots is one of the conditions of the dynamic balance of the Sun. It is shown that the opinion that a large number of spots is a sign of high solar activity is not correct and is atribute to the historical tradition that has developed since the beginning of instrumental observations of the Sun, when the nature of the spots was unknown. The decrease in the number of spots causes a disturbance of the equilibrium of the Sun, and the formation of the solar flares that trigger a flow of energetic particles, including neutrinos, which leads to the occurrence of earthquakes and eruptions of volcanoes.
