Universal History Annotation << Back THE ROAD WILL BE MASTERED BY THE WALKING: TO THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF DMITRY NIKOLAEVICH GARKUNOV E.V. Minina The article is devoted to the scientific activity of Dmitry Nikolevich Garkunov, a tribological scientist, doctor of technical sciences, professor, the Great Patriotic War veteran, who turned 100 on November 24, 2019. The main stages of D.N. Garkunov scientific biography are described in the article and the results of his research and applied activities are analyzed. Dmitry Garkunov is the author of more than 200 scientifi c publications, including 28 monographs, as well as a number of copyright certifi cates and patents. He is a co-author of two scientifi c discoveries – “No-wear Effect” and “Hydrogen Wear of Metals”. These discoveries allowed to create a new scientific direction – “Tribology based on self-organization”. Applied result of D.N. Garkunov’s scientific activity was the creation and implementation of new technologies for friction and wear protection and fundamentally new tribomaterials. Over a long career, he taught dozens of specialist in the fi eld of tribology. On the initiative and with the direct participation of D.N. Garkunov some textbooks for technical universities, refl ecting modern ideas about friction, wear and lubrication of machines and mechanisms were published. The scientifi c achievements of D.N. Garkunov are acknowledged in Russia and abroad. His work was marked by some state awards, including the Russian Government Prize in the field of science and technology (2001) and the Presidential Prize in the fi eld of education (2003). The pinnacle of international recognition of D.N. Garkunov’s achievements in the fi eld of tribology was rewarding him of the International Council of Tribology Gold Medal of in 2005. Keywords: D.N.
