Universal History Annotation << Back HEROES OF THE BATTLE OF LENINGRAD (1941–1944): HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION P.A. PILYUTOV N.V. Shabelnik The article is devoted to the feat of Soviet pilots in the defense of Leningrad. Using the example of the military exploits of the Hero of the Soviet Union, fighter pilot Pyotr Andreevich Pilyutov, the author reveals one of the pages of the history of the defense of the hero-city. The article tells about the difficult and glorious combat path of the Soviet pilot during the defense and liberation of the besieged city, describes his air confrontations with the enemy in the sky over Leningrad. The author dwells in detail on the participation of P.A. Pilyutov in providing air cover for the ice section of the military transport highway, which was named «The Road of Life» in 1941–1943. Based on archival materials, personal files, as well as the memoirs of P. Pilyutov’s colleagues, the author highlights interesting facts about the pre-war service, about his participation in the rescue of the Chelyuskin people, the life and exploits of the Soviet ace during the war years, service as part of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany after the end of the war ... An episode is described about a post-war meeting with a former Luftwaffe pilot with whom P.A. Pilyutov fought an air duel for several months during the defense of Leningrad. The article tells about the life and work of P.A. Pilyutov after completing military service and enrolling in the reserve. The article touches upon the theme of the heroic deed of all defenders of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War, their dedication, courage and courage.
