SOME ASPECTS OF THE ROLE AND PLACE OF WOMEN IN THE KUMYK FAMILY OF THE XIX–XXI CENTURIES: A BRIEF HISTORICAL SKETCH |
A.N. Alilov, Yu.M. Guseynov, A.A. Gazieva
The question of the transformation of the role of women in the Kumyk family is investigated on the basis of field material collected by the author for 3 years on the territories of the Republic of Dagestan that are compactly inhabited by Kumyks1. The article focuses on gender prohibitions and the functioning of the role of customary law in protecting the rights and interests of women’s polo at the turn of three centuries. The norms of customary law and Sharia law have played a huge role in property and inheritance relations among women, which has been repeatedly emphasized by researchers of Caucasian studies. Certain prohibitions on gender intra-family relations were imposed by Kumyk etiquette, according to which the female sex was forbidden to dine with men, talk with her father-in-law, go outside the house without her husband’s permission, etc.
Keywords: adat, Sharia, Kumyks, transformation, gender relations, Dagestan.
