THE PERSIAN CAMPAIGN OF PETER I 1722–1723 AND THE ATTITUDE OF THE DAGESTAN OWNERS TO HIM (ON THE TERENTENNIARY OF THE CAMPAIGN OF PETER I TO THE CASPIAN) |
M.-P. B. Abdusalamov
The article, based on archival materials and special historical literature, examines an important military and political action in the foreign policy of Russia in the first quarter of the XVIII century – the Persian campaign of Peter I 1722–1723. The author focuses on the reaction of local rulers to Peter I’s campaign in the Caspian Sea; their position towards him is analyzed. It is emphasized that the attitude of the Dagestani rulers to the Persian campaign was contradictory. Some of the pro-Turkish feudal lords offered armed resistance to the Russian army, but the majority expressed loyal services to Emperor Peter I. The conclusion is made that the Persian campaign of Peter I gave a serious impetus to the further progressive development of Russian-Caucasian relations.
