Universal History Annotation << Back CHERNOBYL: A QUARTER OF CENTUARY – IT IS NOT MUCH V.V. Kuznetsova 25 years elapsed after Chernobyl catastrophe allows to make some conclusions as to the origins and the consequences of the atomic reactor of the type RBMK breakdown. Firstly, shortcomings of combustion space construction and automatic neutron shield took place. After the command to throw down the emergency neutron rods into this space, the feedback turned to be positive, within 3 first seconds, instead of being negative. Secondly, inadequate planning of the experiment to make turbine of the 4th block to run without load. Inadequatе level of the labor discipline of a part of the chieves and operators of the AES played a large role too. Six of them were had been arrested and passed several years in criminal camps. Neither the Chief Constructor of the reactor RBMK (from the Institute NIIKIET), nor its Scientific Supervisor (from the Kurchatov Institute) were punished. The Deputy director of the latter, academician V.Legasov, who, on behalf of scientists, had been leading “liquidators”on the spot, commited suicide two years sharp after the catastrophe. The constructive defects of the reactor RBMK were eliminated, no similar effects can appear now in working reactors of the type. New medical methods and medicines was worked out which save all the patients irradiated with the dose up to 400 rads. The restricted zone in the Prip’iat area keeps on to be forbidden to live.
