Universal History Annotation << Back THE PRUSSIAN LANDOWNERS OF NATTANGIA UNDER THE RULE OF THE TEUTONIC ORDER IN 1249–1370 S.A. Denisov The article is devoted to the involvement of Prussians in the social system of Order’s State in 1249–1370. This process was studied on the basis of sources (acts and chronicles), which bring light to the history of Nattangia, one of the 11 tribal lands of Prussia, where Order’s policies to attract Prussians was the most effective. Principles of Nattangian’s involvement, which were not studied in historiography, were researched by using of historical-comparative, typological and prosopographical methods. As a result there were determined two groups of lieges, who were obliged to hold military service for the grants of land property (group 1) and additionally to pay tax (group 2). Among representatives of both groups there was the process of social-property differentiation (accumulation of property, refuse of the estate’s cultivation), which was regulated by the Order with special measures: grants of estate to the group of holders (often relatives), the introduction of penalty for the damage to the health of holder (vergeld), confirmation of the rights on the early granted estates. These measures, which allowed to flatten cultivation of land, testify that Order sought not only to obtain military force from Prussian lieges, but also to use with their help its own land fund. Active attraction of Nattangians to the campaigns as military force was caused by their successful invitation in Order’s army as light cavalry that met traditional tactic and equipment of Prussians.
